Will Christian Bale and Johnny Depp Face Off?
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Universal, Adaptation, Drama, Period, Thrillers, Casting, Upcoming Releases,
Michael Mann, the director credited with bringing one of the most buzzed about matchups to the big screen, may be set to do it again. Thirteen years after Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro squared off (briefly) in 1995’s Heat, another electrifying pair is in talks to do the same. With any luck, you may soon be seeing Christian Bale with Johnny Depp at a theater near you.
Bale, 33, and Depp, 44 - arguably two of the most respected and exciting actors working today - have been named as possibles for Public Enemies, the adaptation of a Brian Burrough’s book. The film would pit Depp, as notorious bank robber John Dillinger, against Melvin Purvis (Bale). Purvis was the FBI agent who eventually brought the notorious bank robber down in 1934.
If all goes as planned, the two actors will begin production with Mann later this winter.

Vanessa Hudgens Moves Toward Mainstream Success
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Disney, Music, Musicals, Casting, Celeb News, Celebrity Gossip, Upcoming Releases,
With some stars, it’s all over once Disney gets their hooks into you. Just take a look at Tim Allen, who once had a highly promising comedy career. But High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens won’t fall victim to the teen trap - at least, not yet. The songbird is slated to star in Will, a movie about two very different high school students who form a bond because of a shared love of music.
Wait a minute. That sounds a little familiar…isn’t that the exact plot of the High School Musical movies? Maybe Hudgens isn’t breaking out of her teen queen role after all. In this version, Hudgens plays the popular girl (Sam) who falls for the school outcast. Together with others who don’t quite fit in, they form a rock band.
Shooting for the flick is slated to begin in February, and I’m already bored with the whole project.

Tyler Perry Joins ‘Star Trek’ Film
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Paramount, Science Fiction, Sequels, Casting, Celeb News, Upcoming Releases,
Tyler Perry - the man behind Madea’s Family Reunion and Why Did I get Married? - will be assuming a much smaller role for his next project.
The writer/producer/actor will be taking someone else’s direction while starring in the upcoming Star Trek film. (I believe this may be the first time he’s ever participated in something that didn’t have his name in the title.) Perry will join a continuously expanding cast that already includes Eric Bana, Winona Ryder, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, John Cho and Leonard Nimoy.
If the movie adds one more star, I believe it will have officially reached Robert Altman proportions.

‘27 Dresses’ Gets 7 More Days
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: 20th Century Fox, Romance, Comedy, Upcoming Releases,
Even though its not even up for an award, 20th Century Fox has chosen to make a strategic move with 27 Dresses. The movie, starring Katherine Heigl, was originally scheduled to hit theaters on January 11. Now the romantic comedy’s debut will be pushed back a week to January 18th.
Although a rescheduled date often indicates a less than quality product, Fox claims the change was actually a vote of confidence. Preview audiences have apparently been delighted with the test screenings. The execs are hoping the mid-January open will allow the film to take advantage of the MLK Jr. Holiday weekend. It would also serve as counterprogramming to the action-filled Cloverfield.

Amy Adams’ Enchanted Life
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Disney, Animation, Family, Casting, Celebrity Gossip, New Releases, Upcoming Releases,
Though I have to admit I was personally shocked, the Disney flick Enchanted, which offered a meld of cartoon melodrama and live-action sequences which were amazingly even more over-the-top, became one of the biggest stars of the early holiday movie season. Amy Adams, who played the princess, even snagged a jaw-dropping (on my end) Golden Globe nomination. But now Adams isn’t sure where to take her career.
The thirty-three year old film star pondered the definition of success in a recent Newsweek interview, in which she said she has neither children nor a wedding ring. Adams now has two pictures in the works which couldn’t be more different from cartoonish Disney. Doubt will show the story of two nuns who grapple with the heady issue of sexual abuse, while Sunshine Clearing features two crime scene cleanup sisters.

‘Valkyrie’ Debut Delayed
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: MGM, Action, Drama, Period, Political, Filmmaking, Upcoming Releases,
Valkyrie, a movie already plagued with production issues, has just given us another reason to be wary. It’s now been linked to two of the most cringe-inducing words in the film industry: delayed release. The Tom Cruise biopic about a German officer who plotted to take down Adolf Hitler will now premiere October 3, 2008. Valkyrie was originally slated to open June 27, unfortunately Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects) has yet to shoot an integral war scene.
So let’s now officially add ‘date change’ to the ever-growing list of problems. (Items already noted include Scientology haters, destroyed footage and injured extras.) I predict a Suri fashion faux pas - or maybe even locusts - will trip things up next.

Hope you’re sitting down for this news, Sex and the City fans. According to new rumors, the upcoming Sex and the City movie may be the first installment in a trilogy. That’s three times the sex. The movies will contain all four girls, of course, and all their various men – and what’s more Sexy than that?
One source says the producers are currently working on the script to the second movie, as it seems a foregone conclusion the first Sex and the City movie will become a huge box office hit. A sequel option was included in all the stars’ movie contracts, an option which will be exercised for the succeeding two films.
So strap on those high heels, pour a Cosmo and get ready to get saturated with Sex.

Britney Spears to Play the Virgin Mary?
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Religious, Satire, Comedy, Celebrity Gossip, Upcoming Releases,
US Magazine is reporting that Britney Spears may be taking on a very holy role in the near future. It seems a French producer has deemed the train wreck
pop star a perfect fit for his satirical take on the classic nativity story. In this modern-day version, Britney would play an unwed pregnant girl, named Mary, who gives birth on Christmas Eve in Bethlehem, Maryland.
Although the film is hers for the taking, Spears is still supposedly mulling over the offer. A decision on the role is expected to be made within the next few days. Production on Sweet Baby Jesus is scheduled to begin in March.

Morgan Spurlock Investigates Bin Laden
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Weinstein Company, Documentary, Upcoming Releases,
Morgan Spurlock, who was first introduced to the world through his compelling documentary Super-Size Me and went on to create a series for FX, is on the brink of releasing another interesting film. The documentary, which borrows footage from more than 800 hours of film, will premiere January 21 at the Sundance Film Festival.
Where in the World Is Osama Bin Laden? will show Spurlock in Afghanistan and parts of the Middle East hunting one of the world’s most wanted men. So far, there’s a lot of talk, and some of it suggests the highly unlikely possibility that Spurlock actually located Bin Laden. While this is most likely just hype, this movie probably doesn’t need it. Spurlock’s previous efforts have been highly compelling, and the subject matter of this most recent film is promising.
Spurlock was also the producer behind What Would Jesus Buy?, a documentary dealing with the topic of holiday shopping. Jesus is currently running in limited theaters.

Will Madonna’s Daughter Join Harry Potter?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Adventure, Family, Sequels, Casting, Celeb News, Celebrity Gossip, Upcoming Releases,
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix isn’t even out on video yet, and already talk has turned to the sixth movie installment for the franchise. Sneak peeks of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince are already surfacing, and the casting isn’t even complete.
According to the latest Hollywood-goes-to-Britain gossip, Madonna’s daughter, Lourdes, may soon don a witch’s robe; the 11-year-old is reportedly being sought to join the next Harry-themed movie.
Famed pop singer Madonna has made plenty of forays into the acting field herself, and while her roles in movies like The Next Best Thing and Desperately Seeking Susan were roundly bashed by critics, I still say A League of Their Own is a great movie (and she was pretty good in it, too). Maybe the movie success Madonna once sought will be discovered by Lourdes. Then again, maybe not.
